Author's Note

Welcome ...

to the Fox Tree World!  I hope you and your children enjoy the stories and can’t wait to find out what happens next. The suspense of not knowing exactly where things are going is fun for me too. The Fox Tree Chronicles is a bit different than most young-reader chapter books in that the main story continues from one book to the next. My goal was simple though - to write a series of books that not only 2nd to 5th graders will love to read, but  one that parents will enjoy as well.  I wanted something different and funny that captures the true innocence of a kid’s world. And, most importantly, I didn't want a series full of "issues."  In fact, I am trying my hardest to avoid any of them. Not real life for sure, but I'll leave all the issues for more qualified authors to address.

The Story ...

revolves around two kids, Sara Rae "Sissy" and “Little John" Polk, who unearth two magic arrowheads in the woods behind their house. Their quest to discover the secret behind the arrowheads is the chain that links the books themselves together. It is the arrowheads that send the kids, their friends, and their trusty dog Rover off on some amazing adventures through time. But that's only half of the story. The other half is about the kids’ everyday lives. It's about times when a bus ride to school is a huge part of life: trying to do homework in your lap; saving a seat for a friend; and maybe even looking out the window to see a pig named Joey strolling down the street. I get to reach deep into a treasure trove of memories from my childhood on Arrow Creek Drive in northeast Atlanta. It’s a real-life trip in time for me, and the source of an endless supply of ideas I can weave into the books.

The Characters ...

you will meet are blends of people I’ve known over the years. For the record though, I freely admit that Sissy and Little John’s father, the venerable Mr. John Polk, is based completely on my perception of how my friends and family view me. He is one of the easier characters to write since I’ve had years and years of experience at being me!  All of the characters have been fun, though, and my hope is that every reader will recognize someone they know among the wonderful cast that inhabits the Fox Tree world.

Please  ...

feel free to contact me directly and send your comments.  I’d love to have reviews from you or your children. In fact, some of my youngest test-readers have provided the most valuable comments and input. They were really the ones who gave me the confidence to keep thinking and writing and plugging away in my limited spare time.

And, believe it or not, I am just as curious to see what happens as you are. So ... Stay Tuned!
